Stop Motion Rationales

Figure 1.1 First Video: Fresh Guacamole by PES | Oscar Nominated Short

This video is one of my most liked stop motion videos of all time. Not only the concept itself is interesting, I found it amazing how the objects are able to transition smoothly from one to another and make it look edible. This stop motion has high fps and consistency that requires a lot of effort, which leaves the audience in awe and feel some sort of satisfaction at how polished the production is.

Again, the production is of high quality and the video is really smooth despite being a stop-motion animation. I particularly like this one due to the smooth camera movements contrasting with the slightly choppy movements of the plushies which definitely fits the concept of the movie, it makes it feel like that these are real living objects in real life. The concept was overall wholesome and I liked the editing choices with the camera movements.

Figure 1.3 Third Video: The Marshalls- A Short Stop-Motion Film

As a fan of horror and dark themes I adore Tim Burton, this video had clearly took inspiration from him. This stop-motion video provides a twist that I like, which can be seen in the stylistic choices. In the beginning, the family was portrayed with bright and warm lighting to which it switches to a dark colouring/hue when the twist happens. Not only this, the character movements were in detail from the blinking down to the finger movements. Overall, I absolutely enjoyed and adore the horror theme.

Planning

Figure 2.1 Storyboard of final stop motion video

Before starting, I had to complete the proposal in order to gain a solid image of how I want my stop-motion to look like. I had inspiration from other existing claymotion videos and created a storyboard that I could follow throughout filming.

Shooting Process

Figure 3.1 Shooting process

As an international student living abroad, I didn't have much materials around that I could work with in my place, therefore I had to go as simple as possible in my workspace. I used my ring lamp as the source of lighting and since I wanted to follow the style of my references, I used a paper for the white background.

Figure 3.2 Clay figures of characters

Using modelling clay, I sculpted the characters based on the storyboard that I made, I made sure to use this specific type of clay so that it doesn't dry out and is easy to move.

Figure 3.3 App used to shoot the stop-motion

Using a mobile app called Stop Motion Studio, I shot each scenes using my phone camera. The process in this was simple enough, I simply moved the characters if necessary before capturing the next frame and such until complete.

Editing Process

Figure 4.1 Downloaded and recorded sound effects

After obtaining the raw footages, I downloaded sound effects that are fitting and also recorded the dialogues on my own.

Figure 4.2 Editing using After Effects

Since I had some effects that I wanted to put in, I first compiled all my footages in Adobe After Effects and edited it as necessary. After that, I exported it on Media Encoder so that I can start inserting in all the audios I have.

Figure 4.3 Editing using Premiere Pro

Using Premiere Pro, I added in all the sound effects and adjusted the level accordingly. For my short voice recordings, I edited it so that I can reduce the noise and such and also shifted the pitch according to each characters, Orange being lower while Blue being higher.

REFLECTION

In my own experience, creating this stop motion had been rather fun for me. I was able to create something fun and lighthearted which could adapt to the lack of resources that I currently have. If I could repeat this project again I would try to implant more materials to be a part of my stop-motion that could potentially help the video become more engaging and fun. What I spent my most time on in this project is to come up with ideas good enough for the video, I would say that I got a bit of a blockage but when I was able to get past this hurdle and complete my planning the shooting went on as fast and efficient as possible. Again, I learned about the importance of storyboarding and it should naturally be implemented to anytime I try to create video-related projects.
